What are the health benefits of Taekwondo?
Tae Kwon Do improves strength, speed, balance, flexibility, stamina, muscle tone, reflexes, concentration, self esteem, mental, ethical and physical discipline. It also helps to reduce stress.
Can I participate if i am unfit?
Anyone can particiate. Students range from 5 to 50 years old at our club. You will start off slowly working at a level that you are capable of and working your way up as your body develops strength and conditioning. The only limitation is the ones you set on yourself. If you believe you can do it, you can!!
Do you have to wear a uniform?
Yes, all students must wear the official Taekwon-do uniform: "dobok". This signifies uniformity amongst the students as well as respect for the school, instructor and the art. Uniforms can be obtained through the school.
How long does it take to obtain a Black belt?
Anywhere from 3 to 5 years... it all depends of the amount of time you devote to training and if you feel you are ready to be tested.
How often do I get tested?
It depends on the level of the belts. Usually 2 to 4 months for lower levels and 5 to 12 months for higher ones. There are 9 tests before you can obtain your black belt.
Does your school participate in many competitions?
We compete in as many tournaments as we can. We enter students in local and Provincial Taekwondo tournaments. We also enter our students into "Open" tournaments with competitors from different martial arts.
Do I have to participate in the competitions?
No, but we recommend that students participate in tournaments as a way to improve their skills and to test themselves against different students. If they do not wish to participate, we encourage then to come and cheer on their school and to volunteer their services if help is required.
